The Ministère de l'Économie et de l'Innovation du Québec grants a research funding to Prof. Karim Benyekhlef, director of the Cyberjustice Laboratory, to promote the appropriation and implementation of JusticeBot, a conversational agent dedicated to the rights of tenants and landlords in Quebec, to its two partners: the Régie du logement du Québec and the Aide juridique de Montréal et Laval. This funding is being allocated as part of a call for projects in social innovation and artificial intelligence, launched in 2019 by the Ministère de l'Économie et de l'Innovation.

The JusticeBot Project aims to develop a pilot project, over a 24-month period, in order to promote the appropriation and implementation of JusticeBot, a solution that is both practical and innovative and that addresses a specific social need for tenants and landlords in Quebec. JusticeBot is a web interface, equipped with a conversational agent (a chatbot) based on artificial intelligence techniques, capable of providing legal information to users of the Régie du logement du Québec (RLQ) and the Aide juridique de Montréal et Laval (AJML) on housing law and to provide them with a list of RLQ decisions in situations analogous to their own. The fact that this information is available will also promote the amicable resolution of disputes and thus reduce the current congestion at the RLQ.
Working in partnership with the RLQ and the AJML, which have identified the implementation of a tool such as the JusticeBot as an opportunity to increase their capacity to act on behalf of their clients, the pilot project should make it possible to evaluate the potential and the impacts of their appropriation of JusticeBot, which will be made accessible to all stakeholders in the RLQ and the AJML.
The JusticeBot pilot project, which will receive funding of $201,000, has four objectives:

To control the quality of JusticeBot;

To train RLQ agents and AJML lawyers on the use of JusticeBot;

To evaluate feedback from initial users and incorporate their requests for improvements;

To raise awareness amongst the targeted audiences of JusticeBot to enable them to take ownership of the tool.
