Summary

In this roundtable, Martin Hart-Landsberg and Renaud Lambert will critically question the notion of the “South”, both historically and in the contemporary period. Together they will unpack the history of development and underdevelopment, contrasting Northern economies’ post-war state-driven growth with the economic reforms mandated by international financial institutions to "help" Southern, newly independent countries “develop”. They will also try and show how the concepts of North and South not only apply at the international level, but also within countries as a relevant metaphor for enduring class conflicts.

By contrast, this discussion will address alternative development endeavors undertaken in the 21st century, from the Yasuni Initiative to the creation of the BRICS following the 2008 financial crisis, and the subsequent extension of its membership in 2024. Finally, M. Hart-Landsberg and R. Lambert will reflect on Western reactions to the strengthening of selected regional powers, focusing on the US-led military buildup in East Asia aimed at containing the perceived North Korean and Chinese menaces.
